Huggins, U.S.N.R., Interpreter Miss Lucille G. Brunner, Stenographer. Questions by: Mr. Hyde. OATH OF INTERPRETER Mr. Hyde: “Lt. Comdr. Huggins, the Interpreter, having been duly sworn on previous interrogations of General OSHIMA, now continues to interpret from English to Japanese and from Japanese into English, as required in this proceeding. Q. General, as we were leaving yesterday you indicated that there was another pact that you would like to tell us about today. You may proceed with that. A. This pact - the No Separate Peace Treaty - was consummated between Japan, Germany, and Italy on December 11, 1941. 1 Q. General, probably we had better defer talking about this pact until a little later because this pact was consummated at a date somewhat beyond the period of time that we are talking about at the present time. Yesterday, we were discussing whether you resigned or whether you were recalled as Ambassador from Germany and I indicated to you that I had information from the Foreign Office to the effect that you were recalled and did not resign. I checked this matter when I returned to the office last night and I have since learned that the information I had was not from the Foreign Office, but was from the newspapers and I have since obtained information from other sources to the effect that you did resign. At any rate I have been told by my informant that you sent a telegram of resignation 1 The bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan was on December 7 1941, when Japan also bombed the Philippines, Guam, Wake Island, and attacked the British Air Bases near Singapore. Singapore was later taken by the Japanese on 15th February 1942, not long after the attack on Pearl Harbor. General Yamashita led a relatively small force of about 30,000 to take Singapore, and there were some atrocities committed by his troops. 30,000 may seem like a large number, but there were some 80,000 British defenders at Singapore and some 300,000 Japanese troops in the earlier Battle of Shanghai. The defeat of Singapore was considered the worst defeat of all time for British led forces. Yamashita was hanged for atrocities committed later in the war under the direction of Iwabuchi who disobeyed Yamashita and stayed in Manila. Some 100,000 Philippine civilians were brutally murdered in the Manila Massacre. 67
