The other day when we were talking about the German Ambassador Stahmer you indicated that when he came to Japan you met him, but you did not discuss the proposed Tripartite Pact with him, and in that same statement you stated that you did not have anything to do with the final consummation of the treaty. I am wondering what the occasion was that you met Mr. Stahmer and what it was you talked about? A. When he came from Germany he looked me up and brought me a present of some liquor - Kirsch. At that time I asked him what he was doing in Japan and he said that in case the Tripartite Pact negotiations started again he was in a position to do something about it, as he had received permission from the German Foreign Office. However, he also said that he did not know what the Japanese feelings were upon the matter and I suggested to him that he bring up the matter with Foreign Minister MATSUOKA. That was all. Q. Did you have any meetings or conversations with him after that? 87
