7 MARCH 1946 Date and Time: 7 March 1946, 1330-1525 hours Place: Sugamo Prison, Tokyo, Japan Present: General Hiroshi OSHIMA G. Osmond Hyde, Interrogator Lt. Comdr. F.B. Huggins, U.S.N.R., Interpreter Miss Lucille G. Brunner, Stenographer. Questions by: Mr. Hyde. OATH OF INTERPRETER Mr. Hyde: “Lt. Comdr. Huggins, the Interpreter, having been duly sworn on previous interrogations of General OSHIMA, now continues to interpret from English to Japanese and from Japanese into English, as required in this proceeding. Q. General, will you now reply to the last question that I asked before we adjourned yesterday? A. In the first place, I can state that absolutely no discussions along these lines were carried on at any meeting between MATSUOKA and Ribbentrop, at which I was also present. Further, at no time did I discuss the matter of a German written promise of assistance with Ribbentrop. Nor did MATSUOKA ever tell me that he had asked for such a promise or that he had discussed the Singapore subject with Ribbentrop. I can only say that if Ribbentrop said this there was some error. Q. Go ahead. A. In regard to the matter of the maps, no such discussion was entered into at any meeting of Ribbentrop and MATSUOKA, at which I was present. Also MATSUOKA never told me that the matter had been brought up in his meetings with Ribbentrop. As I recall it and as I believe I told you, the matter of the maps was brought up later in April or May. It was not my position to discuss military tactics, and had I done so I would have been violating the Supreme Prerogative. Q. General, there is no suggestion here in my question to you that the matter of procuring this map had been discussed by Ribbentrop, MATSUOKA and yourself. On the contrary Ribbentrop states here that he had already discussed these questions with you. Now that was before the meeting, the record of which I am taking this from. Now, what I am interested in having you tell us is about the meeting between Ribbentrop and you when Ribbentrop says he asked you to procure the map of Singapore. 192
